چکیده

Using the analogy between dielectric breakdown and mechanical fracture, a phase-field model for dielectric damage initiation and evolution has been developed. The model utilizes a continuous field of damage variable to differentiate a localized conductive channel and the undamaged bulk material. By employing a Griffith type energy criterion for the propagation of a conductive channel, direct handling of the intricate microscopic details in the process zone is avoided. This paper implements the model into a finite-element code, and studies the breakdown-resistant effect of various types of composite structures. Numerical calculations suggest that fillers of higher permittivity and elliptic shapes or in laminate structures are more effective in resting conductive channels and resisting catastrophic breakdown. Weak sacrificial fillers, which cause the composite to undergo a twostage damage process, are also found very effective in breakdown resistance. © 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Understanding the Percolation Characteristics of Nonlinear Composite Dielectrics

Nonlinear composite dielectrics can function as smart materials for stress control and field grading in all fields of electrical insulations. The percolation process is a significant issue of composite dielectrics. However, the classic percolation theory mainly deals with traditional composites in which the electrical parameters of both insulation matrix and conducting fillers are independent o...

Heavy-Ion-Induced Breakdown in Ultra-Thin Gate Oxides and High-k Dielectrics

We present experimental results on single-event-induced breakdown in sub-5-nm plasma-enhanced SiO2, nitrided SiO2, Al2O3, HfO2, and Zr0 4Si1 6O4 dielectrics typical of current and future-generation commercial gate oxides. These advanced oxides are found to be quite resistant to ion-induced breakdown. Radiation-induced soft breakdown was observed in some films with 342 MeV Au (LET = 80 MeV/mg/cm...

Instabilities in multilayered soft dielectrics

Experimental observations clearly show that the performance of dielectric elastomericbased devices can be considerably improved using composite materials. A critical issue in the development of composite dielectric materials toward applications is the prediction of their failure mechanisms due to the applied electromechanical loads. In this paper we investigate analytically the influence of ele...

Mechanical constraints enhance electrical energy densities of soft dielectrics

Dielectrics are essential components in modern electronics and electric systems. When a sufficiently high voltage is applied on a layer of a dielectric, the dielectric will breakdown electrically. The breakdown limits the electrical energy density of the dielectric. We show that constraining the deformation of soft dielectrics can greatly enhance their breakdown electric fields and thus increas...
